Is it crap? Does it breakdown? Or is it damn reliable?

I've got two laptops of my own. One is a new Mac and is fantastic. The other is a Dell which I installed Ubuntu on.
One of my housemates has a HP with Vista and it's been trouble since day one

Funny, the ones that a lot of trade guys say last well with little hassle are the HP/Compaq ones and the Toshibas.
