Michele Neylon runs a web-hosting and domains company called Blacknight. For one day only (today), he's registering domains for €12.15 (€10 excluding Vat), about half the price of a normal .ie registration. He'll make a bit of a loss on this. But he's onto a winner. Because loads of people now know about it. And those who have registered (me included) will, if they get a decent service, see no reason to move registrars in future, when the 'normal' profitable rates come due. So it's a smart long-term move. And it's exactly what Irish retailers should be doing right now: slash your prices, take a short-term loss, and build big customer loyalty.
Smart move, for sure. Although to be honest I don't understand why more people don't just register .eu domains instead of the relatively exorbitant .ie. A dot.eu domain only costs about €12.50 and that's not a special one day rate. I guess I'm just a passionate europhile but also if there's money to be saved it makes sense right?

Orlaith, yeah, except 90% of punters have never heard of it. Doesn't make a difference for you or me, but probably does if you're an ordinary company...

Has anyone here used Blacknight? I'm considering moving to a new hosting service at the moment, having suffered from a few inconvenient downtimes recently.
