Ireland Offline is getting fairly perturbed about this whole Irma v ISPs thing. It's just sent out a press release calling for 'Net neutrality'. In a nutshell, this means that internet users would have the right to go anywhere they want on the web, as long as they didn't engage in illegality. It makes sense to me.
Apparently, the Norwegians use this approach. (Link via Ireland Offline.)
Unfortunately, it has zero chance of being adopted in Ireland. We're way too backward and 'pro-business' to consider this.

The pro-business approach is essentially why AngloIrish Bank was allowed to sink the banking system into the crisis it is in now.
The regulators knew of the fraud that was going on and yet did absolutely nothing to protect consumers or indeed other businesses.
Time to re-evaluate this pro-business ideal that has the economy in such dire straits?
Light touch regulation at it's worst and it's the same across all regulated industries. We'd be better off without regulators...
