This is a bit disappointing. I'm sitting in the Santry Omnicentre, about 100 metres from a busy Meteor shop. And the best speed I can get is 0.2Mbs. I'm trying to surf the web but, at this speed, it's very difficult.
Larry Smith, Meteor's CEO, stated that the "minimum speed you would get is 2Mbs". But I've recorded far lower speeds than that in lots of places around Dublin.
(To be fair, I have also seen speeds in excess of 5Mbs.)
I wonder if it's the same in Cork, the other launch city?
the data rate you receive is based around a number of conditions,
The number of users using the cell site
Your distance from the cell site
Cell breathing (CDMA)
and a number of other technical issues.
In effect it looks like you were lucky and the data rate you got would probably be the norm for most people using cellular midband solutions.

The minimum speed for one user only on a sector is about 120kbps. If more than one user it's less.
A sector is usually a 1/3rd pie slice of Mast cell.

The poorer the signal or more users, less "codes" per person can be used.

This is the same for all Mobile systems everywhere.

The data rate you are seeing is normal for mobile midband.
Your data rate depends on a number of factors, some of them are:
Distance from Cellsite
Number of users sharing the bandwidth
Cell breathing (CDMA)
We @ IoffL have finished a set of slides that explains the issues in detail...
Shops generally aren't cellsites.

Guys,
Thanks for the technical background.
For the layman, the company's CEO said: "this will provide a minimum speed of 2Mbs to all Meteor broadband users".
It doesn't look like this is the case.
