Google is revving up its camera-equipped car(s) for an Irish addition to its Streetview application. It will start photographing streets and public areas in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford next week.
The process will take "somewhere between three months and a year", said Ed Parsons, Google's 'geospatial technologist' in charge of the project. When it's finished, it will show streetside views of all major city streets and public spaces.
The areas mapped will include city suburbs, said Parsons, and will be determined by population density and business locations.
The photos will mostly be limited to locations where cars can drive. But in the case of major city pedestrian thoroughfares, such as Dublin's Grafton Street and Henry Street, Parsons said that undefined "other methods" would be used.
