The Irish Service Providers Association of Ireland (ISPAI) has finally released a response to the website-blocking deal between the music industry (through Irma) and Eircom, Ireland's biggest ISP.
The organisation condemns the legal letter sent by Irma to ISPs as "spurious". And it goes on to highlight ISPs' duty to protect their customers' privacy.
What it does not say is that Irish ISPs will fight any attempt by the music industry to coerce them into blocking websites of Irma's choice.
It could have said this. But it deliberately didn't. Because ISPs will not rule this course of action out.
Quite simply, if large ISPs feel that their customers will not overly care about them blocking a couple of torrent sharing sites, a similar deal to Eircom's will be contemplated. This is especially so if Irma shows that it is serious about taking individual ISPs to court.
This entire situation depends on ordinary peoples' attitude. Do we care? That is what ISPs really want to know.
So far, the message is that (the great majority of) Irish people do not, unfortunately, care.
