I attended Ibec's annual telecoms ball on Friday night. Normally, this is a great night when senior industry figures really let their hair down and talk freely about things. This year, it was a muted, tense affair.
It was well attended (as usual), but few executives were smiling or laughing throughout. The charity auction -- which usually generates a lot of money for a chosen worthy cause -- was especially muted. I tried to liven it up by bidding several times (up to €700) on a signed lead guitar from The Blizzards (which eventually sold for €850), but to no avail.
Whereas people normally stay until the wee hours, there was a clearout around midnight. (In fairness, this may have been helped to the band, which played 1980s soft rock numbers.)
Hopefully, next year will see a return to madcap antics.
